Choosing the Best Bean Bag Chair for Student Accommodation

Mark Mellett • 10.08.2026 • 5 min read

Move into student accommodation and you learn fast that your seating options are grim the bed, a wobbly desk chair, or the floor. A bean bag fixes that it's cheap, it weighs almost nothing, and it tucks into the corner your bed frame hasn't already claimed. It's also why so many of the bean bags we make at Elephant Living end up in student rooms come September.

But here's what most people find out the hard way plenty of bean bags are only comfortable for about ten minutes. You drop into it, it feels great, and then you're slowly folding in half while your back files a quiet complaint. If you're going to read, study and scroll in it for hours (and you are), it pays to know what makes one comfortable. It really comes down to three things size, filling, and a couple of small details.

What size bean bag fits a student room?

The most common mistake is going too small to save space. A bean bag that's too little leaves you perched on top of it with your chin on your chest grand for a photo, miserable for an evening. You want one big enough to catch your whole back so you can properly lean in.

In a single room, a compact-but-adult size like the Elephant Junior Bean Bag does the job without swallowing the floor and the smaller ones can be stood upright or pushed under the bed when you want the room back. Measure your clear floor before you buy, too; it takes thirty seconds and saves you from a bag that ends up blocking the door.

If you've a bit more room, or you're sharing, size up the Jumbo is happily big enough for two. Don't agonise over the footprint. Just make sure it's big enough to hold you up when you're three chapters deep.

Foam or beads - Which bean bag filling is better?

This is the part nobody tells you, and it makes the biggest difference. Cheap bean bags are stuffed with polystyrene beads. They feel lovely for the first few minutes, then the beads shuffle off to the sides, and you end up sitting on the floor with a fabric ring around you. They also go flat and need topping up.

Memory foam is a different animal. It moulds around you, holds its shape, and keeps supporting your back the whole time you're in it so hour two feels like hour one. If reading or studying is the main event, this is what you want. The Elephant Kumo is filled with exactly that kind of foam, and it's the one we'd steer a student towards for long sessions. The only catch is that foam is heavier, so it's less of a "fling it across the room" seat than a bead-filled one a fair trade if comfort is the priority.

Rule of thumb - Beads for the odd lounge, foam for daily use.

What Material should you look for in a Bean Bag?

Two things, first, a washable cover with a proper safety-lock zip because you will spill something (coffee, noodles, a full cup of tea during a 9am scramble), and a cover you can unzip and throw in the machine, like the Elephant Mellow's, turns a disaster into a five-minute fix.

Lean towards tougher, tightly woven fabrics that shrug off marks Olefin is built to resist stains and water and won't fade rather than delicate faux fur that shows everyone. Second, a breathable fabric, since you'll be in contact with it for hours and nothing kills a reading session like a seat that goes hot and sticky halfway through.

Can a bean bag double as extra seating for guests?

Definitely, it's one of the quiet perks. When friends pile in for a film or a few drinks, a bean bag is the seat nobody has to fight over: drag it wherever it's needed, drop into it as a chair or flop back like a recliner, and when everyone's gone you just stand it in the corner or slide it under the bed. A lightweight, bead-filled option like the Elephant Living Boho is ideal here easy to move around, and comfy enough that someone will inevitably claim it for the whole night.

Tips to Clean the Bean Bag?

Student life is hard on furniture, so this matters more than you'd think but it's easy if you've bought the right cover:

·  Act fast on spills. Blot straight away instead of rubbing it in; most things lift out if you catch them early.

·  Machine-wash removable covers. Unzip, wash on a cool gentle cycle, then air-dry skip the tumble dryer so it doesn't shrink.

·  Wipe-clean fabrics need even less. Water-resistant covers like Elephant's Classic Nylon come clean with a damp cloth and a little mild soap.

·  Go gentle on stubborn marks. A soft brush and mild soapy water shift most stains; avoid bleach or harsh chemicals, which wreck the fabric.

·  Wash the cover, not the filling. Keep the foam or beads and the inner liner dry only the outer cover goes in the machine.

·   Dry it fully before zipping back up, so you don't trap damp and end up with a musty smell.

Choose memory foam if you'll use it daily and buy the biggest size your room can take the Kumo for comfort, the Mellow for a washable all-rounder, or the Junior if your room is genuinely tiny.

FAQs

1.     Are bean bag chairs good for studying?

Yes, if it supports your back. A memory-foam bean bag holds its shape and keeps you propped up, so you're not forever wriggling to get comfortable. Add a lamp, sit away from your bed, and it works surprisingly well as a study spot.

2.     Will a bean bag fit in a small room dorm room?

Yes. A compact adult size gives you real comfort without taking over, and since they're light you can move it aside when you need the floor. Just don't size down so far that it stops holding you up.

3.     Are they hard to keep clean the bean bag?

Not if the cover comes off. Look for a removable, washable one unzip, wash, done. Much easier than scrubbing a fixed chair.

 4.   Are bean bags bad for your back?

Only the bad ones. A shapeless, under-filled bag gives you nothing to lean on; a properly filled, right-sized one especially foam supports your back and takes the pressure off  your neck.
