How to Refill a Bean Bag: Step-by-Step Guide

Mark Mellett • 24.03.2026 • 6 min read

Bean bags don't stay perfectly plump forever, and that's completely normal. Even the most premium Elephant Living bean bags gradually lose volume over time as the filling compresses with everyday use. The good news? Refilling a bean bag is quick, easy and far cheaper than buying a new one.

Whether you've had your Elephant Jumbo Bean Bag for a few years and it's starting to sag, or your kids have well and truly squashed the life out of their Junior Bean Bag, this guide shows you how to refill a bean bag step by step: when it's time to top up, what you need, how much filling to use, and how to do it without scattering beads across the room.

Why Does a Bean Bag Go Flat?

Before you reach for a refill pack, it helps to understand what's happening inside your bean bag. Most bean bags, including our classic Elephant Living bean bags, are filled with expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads. These tiny, lightweight beads give a bean bag its signature squishy, mouldable feel.

Over time, the air pockets inside each bead compress under your body weight. The beads don't disappear; they shrink and pack together, which reduces the total volume inside the bag. This is completely normal and a sign your bean bag has been well loved, not poorly made.

How quickly a bean bag goes flat depends on:

  • How often it's used: a bean bag used daily by the whole family flattens faster than one used occasionally.
  • Weight: heavier use compresses the beads more quickly.
  • Heat: long spells in direct sunlight or beside a radiator can make the beads break down faster.

For most households, a bean bag needs a refill every 1 to 3 years, depending on how heavily it's used.

What Do You Need to Refill a Bean Bag?

Getting everything ready before you start makes the job quicker and far less messy.

  • A bean bag refill pack: use good-quality EPS beads made for bean bags. Our Elephant Bean Bag Refill Packs are matched to our range. The right filling matters, as cheap, low-quality beads compact again quickly and don't feel as comfortable.
  • A funnel or cardboard tube: your secret weapon against mess. A large plastic funnel, or a piece of card rolled into a cone, lets you control exactly where the beads go.
  • A helper (optional but recommended): a second pair of hands to hold the bag open while you pour makes it much easier, especially with larger bags like the Jumbo.
  • A drop sheet or old bedsheet: lay it on the floor around your work area. Even with a funnel, a few beads will escape, and a sheet lets you fold them up and pour them back in instead of vacuuming the whole room.

How to Refill a Bean Bag: Step by Step

Step 1: Prepare your space

Pick a spot where spills are easy to contain, such as a corner of a room or a bathroom. Close all windows and doors and turn off any fans. EPS beads are incredibly light and will float away in the slightest breeze, so keep children and pets out of the room too.

Step 2: Lay down a sheet and open the zip

Spread an old bedsheet or drop sheet on the floor and place the bean bag on top. To open the safety zip on your Elephant Living bean bag, thread a small paperclip through the zip pull, then unzip slowly and carefully.

Step 3: Insert your funnel and start pouring

Place a funnel or rolled cardboard tube into the zip opening; this is the step that saves you a big clean-up. Cut a small corner off your refill pack and pour slowly and steadily, stopping every so often to shake the bag so the filling settles evenly.

Step 4: Test the firmness as you go

After adding roughly half the pack, zip up and do a sit test. You're aiming for that squishy-but-supportive sweet spot: not rock solid, not flat. Keep adding filling a little at a time until it feels just right.

Step 5: Zip up and tidy away

Close the zip securely (and the inner liner first, if your bean bag has one). Give the bag a final shake and fluff it by hand. Fold the drop sheet inwards to catch any stray beads, then run the vacuum around the area for any escapees.

How Much Filling Does a Bean Bag Need?

This is one of the most common questions, and the honest answer is that it depends on the size of your bean bag and how flat it has become. Here's a simple way to judge it:

  • Slightly flat: your bag has lost a little bounce but still holds its shape reasonably well. A top-up of around 15–20% of its original filling is usually all it needs to feel fresh again.
  • Very flat: you're sinking too low and the bag looks visibly flat or lopsided. Expect to add around 30–50% of its original volume to bring it back to its best.
  • Beads feel powdery or dusty: the beads have broken down beyond recovery. Replacing all of the filling is a better option than topping up.

Our Bean Bag Refill Packs come in 170-litre and 340-litre sizes. The 170-litre pack suits most top-ups, while the 340-litre pack is the better choice for larger bean bags or a full refill. They're generous, too: one customer told us their pack was big enough for a full restore with enough left over for two more top-ups.

Tips to Keep Your Bean Bag Full for Longer

Once you've refilled your bean bag, a few simple habits will help it stay plump for as long as possible:

  • Rotate your bean bag regularly so the filling spreads evenly and doesn't compress in one spot.
  • Give it a quick shake and fluff after use to help the beads keep their volume.
  • Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators so the EPS beads don't break down too quickly.
  • Remove and wash the cover regularly; most Elephant Living covers are machine washable.
  • Store any leftover filling in a sealed bag so it's clean and ready for the next top-up.

Bean Bag Refill FAQs

How often should you refill a bean bag?

For most households, a bean bag needs refilling every 1 to 3 years, depending on how often it's used. A bean bag used daily by the whole family will flatten faster than one used occasionally.

Can you overfill a bean bag?

Yes. An overfilled bean bag loses its flexibility and mouldable feel, which makes it uncomfortable to sit in. Do a sit test as you go and stop adding filling once it reaches that squishy-but-supportive sweet spot.

What is the best filling for a bean bag?

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads are the most common and recommended bean bag filling. They're lightweight, durable and give that signature squishy feel. Always use good-quality beads, as cheap alternatives compact quickly and won't last.

How do you refill a bean bag without making a mess?

Preparation is everything. Close all windows and doors, lay a drop sheet on the floor and pour through a funnel or cardboard tube. EPS beads are very light and scatter in even the slightest breeze, so a little preparation goes a long way.
